The Italian cellist Riccardo Pes joins the pianist Yuki Negishi for a programme centred on works for cello and piano by Prokofiev, Poulenc and Stravinsky. The three composers met in Paris, they became friends and they worked on many occasions for Sergei Diaghilev, the influential ballet impresario.
"Riccardo Pes is a very creative cellist and composer. His way of playing is a perfect combination of knowledge, technical skills, natural lyricism, fluent sound and fine musical instinct.” Giovanni Sollima
Riccardo Pes was born in Spilimbergo, Italy and studied with Melissa Phelps at the Royal College of Music, London, on the Artist Diploma course. He was an RCM Scholar, supported by the Soiree d'Or Award, Pauline Hartley Award and the Kathleen Trust. He has been also a recipient of the Prokofiev Trust Award.
He has played music from Bach to Morricone at the AHA! Festival at the University of Gothenburg, Mittelfest, Terre di Maremma Festival, High Notes Festival (Lucca), the Venice Biennale. London appearances include the Elgar Room at the Royal Albert Hall, King’s Place, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Royal Academy of Arts and Lincoln’s Inn Chapel.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Yuki Negishi started playing the piano at the age of 5 in New York City. At the age of 10, she was accepted to the Juilliard School Pre-College Division as an honorary scholarship student. She obtained her Masters in Music degree with distinction and Artist Diploma in 2006 at the Royal College of Music.
Yuki Negishi has established herself as a pianist of rare poetry, passion and virtuosity, as well as an adjudicator, educator and researcher, captivating audiences wherever she performs around the world. Yuki has already performed in over 500 concerts in the UK alone, including many of the most important halls and festivals, and regularly performs about 30 concerts a year as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician in countries such as the Netherlands (Concertgebouw), France, Germany, Switzerland (Tonhalle), Italy, Romania, Japan, China and the USA.
She has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, ITV, Channel 4, Dutch, Polish, Romanian and French television and radio. She will be releasing her second CD on the Quartz label in 2022, including music by Chopin, Kapustin and the world-premiere recording of Melanie Spanswick's Enigma, written for Yuki in 2019.
